Why did you decide to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP)?

鈥淚 have seen first hand the rising impact of the lack of paediatric ophthalmologists, leading to increasing workloads, burnout for staff and increased waiting times for patients.

鈥淎CP roles provide much needed career progression opportunities and I saw the potential to be able to further develop my clinical, leadership, education and research skills for the benefit of the department, our patients and the wider ophthalmology community. Whilst being able to expand my clinical role into an area that overlaps my core profession, building on my clinical foundations and knowledge to provide improved holistic care for my patients."

How has the programme benefited your practice and professional development so far?

鈥淭he ACP paediatric ophthalmology course at 葫芦影业 is opening up possibilities and opportunities within my working day and career that up until now haven鈥檛 been possible.

Compared to where I was in my career two years ago, there has been a huge shift in my confidence and job satisfaction, and my career prospects are far better than they were previously.

Advanced Clinical Practice Ophthalmology (Paediatrics)

鈥淎s for the four pillars, they are similar in terms of clinical and educational, though the areas these encompass are shifting to include paediatric ophthalmology rather than being limited to orthoptics.

鈥淚 am also increasing my research and leadership pillars more and more as the course progresses. I recently presented my service evaluation findings at a national conference - winning an award for one of best orthoptic presentations - which is something I never would have had the opportunity or confidence to do previously!鈥

What difference do you think this course has made to patient care in your area?

鈥淎s I progress through my training, consultants, managers and patients all see the potential and real benefits that I, as a non-medical health care professional, can bring to paediatric ophthalmology, from streamlined appointments to more time to explain conditions, answer questions and implement change.

鈥淚 reflected on this recently, after completing a post-operative check on an esotropic patient. I was able to assess them on a slit-lamp to check how they were healing, in addition to being able to complete their orthoptic checks. I had seen this patient in the ophthalmology clinic pre-op, in the theatre assessment unit pre-operatively, observed the surgery, and was there post-operatively in recovery. The patient鈥檚 Mum, who is also a healthcare professional, spoke very highly and thankfully of the care received.

鈥淭his humbling feedback makes the hard work worth it and shows how much my role has changed since starting the course, whilst hinting at the possibilities the future holds as I progress through the course and my development in this new role.鈥
